KIMBERLEY PROCESS CERTIFICATION

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, known also as KPCS or simply The Kimberley Process, was established in 2003 to prevent the financing of rebel groups through the sale of diamonds. The United Nations resolution 55/56 is designed to insure the sources of rough diamonds are free of conflict. Preventing "blood diamonds" from entering the rough diamond market is an important part of the Kimberley Process. Another important aspect is to avoid the financing of war and human rights abuses when consumers purchase a diamond. The policy is based on "voluntary self regulation" and, as a result, some believe there is a "lack of transparency".
