Ice Road to Diavik Diamond Mine
THE ICE ROAD

The Diavik Diamond Mine operates in the remote Canadian wilderness. Stretching 375 miles, the ice road passes Diavik at the midway point. Frozen ponds and lakes are the only foundation for more than 75% of the road. The road is only open from February to April, a period of about eight to ten weeks and must be built over again each year. It takes approximately 15 hours to make the trip and longer for heavy loads. Around 2500 truckloads of supplies go to Diavik Diamond Mine each year. In order to protect the ice, the speed is carefully controlled.
