DIAVIK DIAMOND MINE

The Diavik Diamond Mine is 136 miles outside of the Arctic Circle and is surrounded by tundra or “Barren Lands” as early explorers called it. Temperatures can reach 40 degrees below zero. On East Island in a lake called Lac de Gras, Diavik rests on Precambrian Rocks that are one of the oldest geological structures on earth, formed about 2.5 billion years ago. The aboriginal name for Lac de Gras is Ekati, meaning “fat lake” due to local quartz that resembles caribou fat.
