Some gemstone, components and metal seams are damaged by the heat needed to repair jewelry. Trying to avoid damage, lead was frequently used because it melts at a very low temperature. Certain types of glue were also used to repair delicate pieces of jewelry.

Such contaminants make even simple repair jobs difficult. The solvents used to remove glue can cause damage. If a jeweler’s file crosses over lead, it renders the tool useless.
