New Alex Sepkus Jewelry Line!
Alex_sepkus_jewelry

A native of Lithuania, Alex Sepkus is renowned for the microscopic details in his jewelry. The artist holds a graduate degree in industrial design from the Lithuanian Academy of Arts, where he studied glassmaking, etching, and sculptures before discovering his life’s passion in goldsmithing.

During the early 1990s, Sepkus met a kindred spirit in jeweler and entrepreneur, Jeffrey Feero, and together, they opened Alex Sepkus, Inc in New York, NY. Within the first five years, the artist received the prestigious New Designer of the Year award from the Jewelers of America. Today, Sepkus is still one of the most talked about artists in the jewelry industry and continues to create breathtaking pieces with intriguing designs and textures.

“When I design a piece of jewelry, it is as if I am writing a book. Each design is a chapter, not in words but in shapes and textures. I make precious stones and cold metal speak.”

New Sarah Graham Jewelry Line!
Sarah_graham_jewelry

Sarah Graham Metalsmithing creates important jewelry for everyday wear, pieces that announce the confidence you possess in your own personal style. Inspired design, exceptional quality, and superior wearability combine with 18 karat gold and blackened cobalt chrome, and black, white and cognac diamonds, as well as Akoya and Tahitian Pearls, to bring into being a collection of jewelry that is both bold and daring without sacrificing the elegance and sophistication that assure its timeless quality.

By incorporating innovative materials with her exceptional design sense, Sarah Graham creates jewelry that is unlike anything else; organic, textural, with a muted palate that is subtly feminine, yet substantial; unique, yet universal in its appeal. The natural inspiration behind the jewelry – whether cast directly from Jacaranda Pods and decayed wood or rendered in wax from a microscopic view of single cell marine organisms – gives her designs a texture and feel that makes them infinitely wearable. But it is the matte black finish of oxidized cobalt chrome juxtaposed with 18k yellow, rose and white gold, set with colored diamonds, that is its’ most eye-catching element.

New Stainless Steel Collection From Austria!
Humphrey_collection

The name “Humphrey” was developed based on the actor Humphrey Bogart. Whose most famous movie “Casablanca” stands for the qualities we associate with our products: classical, romantic, timeless, immortal, eternal love and fidelity!

Humphrey is dedicated to creating future design classics – that is to say, they design adornments that will be as beautiful and as relevant in 20 or 50 years as they are today. Their designs are simple and minimal; they do not steal the spotlight so much as they enhance the beauty of the wearer. Humphrey uses only the finest metals – 400 series stainless steel and red gold, which are hypoallergenic and flawless in finish – and the highest quality gems. They seek to constantly innovate with new forms and new materials.

“Why copy someone else when being yourself is so much more interesting?”

Hi Everyone, Thank you for your concerns! As most of you are already aware, they shut down Main Street yesterday due to major flooding and everyone had to evacuate. Considerable Weight

A couple came to us recently for a wedding band. Unspoken communication and shared glances made it obvious they were already married and deeply in love. We were asked to create a heavy, well made wedding band. We did.

Yesterday, the woman visited, sharing her gratitude and news of her husband’s death. It meant the world to her that we completed her band while he was alive. It is the last piece of jewelry he purchased. It may be the most important.

You see, they knew he was not well.

Jewelry can be as meaningful as you need it to be especially from a little store where you and your husband enjoyed shopping.

The considerable weight of the wedding band we made pales in comparison to the emotional weight now placed upon it.

Thoughtfully,

Your Boys In Ellicott City

A Letter of Gratitude Like None Before
Keithanddevon1_1

Everyone enjoys being appreciated and it is the constant encouragement from my customers that keeps me going. A note of thanks came at a much needed time for me. Here is some of what they said:

We were deeply moved by the personal time you dedicated to the process to better understand our tastes and needs. You poured much thought, sensitivity, and care into helping us envision that inimitable ring.

We can’t help but sing your praises.

Quite simply, you were meant to design our ring, as we were meant to cherish it. We wanted every part of our engagement and wedding process to be imbued with depth and meaning. You gave us this through passion and professionalism, and for that we will be appreciative always.

Best,

Devon and Keith

I Know My Way Around the Kitchen.
Halla121076email

It was apparent from the start that Alex knew Betsy very well. Saying, “She would really love this.” and “She’d love it even more if it had sapphires.” It’s rare for me to hear such strong resolve.

Shopping alone in a traditional manner, he enjoyed the element of surprising her. His loyalty to Betsy impressed me.

An evening was to unfold at home, intimately over a great meal. At one point he said to me, “I guess I know my way around the kitchen.”

This is a proposal worth writing about for a few reasons. Mixing the element of surprise with Alex’s confidence over asking for Betsy’s hand in marriage was heightened even further by his commitment to be true to himself.

I suspect Betsy will be enjoying many more dinners at home with Alex.

Congratulations! WELL DONE!

Some of the most endearing proposals unfold naturally, honestly and with great sentiment.

Eric, I congratulate you. What you did is nothing short of outstanding.

I bet the fragrance and beauty of Cherry Blossoms, came rushing back from that meaninfful first date.

Tell me, did she notice the engraving and what it represented right away? I almost hope she saw it the next day for the first time and was flooded with emotion all over again.

I thank you kindly.

John spoke fondly of his girlfriend who was in Italy and he John seemed to have a solid grasp of how to make her happy. He had us create an engagement ring. Then he got on a plane and flew to Italy. He popped the question and she said yes. Newly engaged, they returned to the United States and relocated to Sante Fe, New Mexico.

Wow. Congratulations!

I love sharing a story that’s filled with all the good stuff life offers.

Natural Alexandrite
Naturalalexandrite

Building custom jewelry takes time and is a process to be enjoyed. Doug and Kathy came to me wanting a Natural Alexandrite as an engagement ring. It was also important that we use diamonds from Kathy’s Grandmother. Natural Alexandrite has a color shift depending on the light it is exposed to. I tried to capture the change of color in the photos above. As Kathy’s Mother said, “The pictures don’t do it justice.” Hey, I’m a fine jeweler not a photographer. In any event, Doug proposed and Kathy is proudly wearing her new ring. If you notice an elated woman dodging under different light bulbs around town, it might be Kathy. She’s not armed and should be considered an overly happy and engaged female. LOL.

Congratulations!

A Hundred More Dollars & David Yurman

Purchases must happen to some extent. People want everything to have more meaning and be more important than the money being spent. This type of thinking blends perfectly with the philosophy here at CRAIG COYNE.

Less frequent, important, and personal have always been our strongest recommendations.

I frankly don’t understand how anyone’s emotions would increase in relationship to how much they spend. When I want to honor a loved one, cherish an occasion or express my devotion, I almost resent the notion that it must have a price tag on it.

A few weeks ago my mother turned eighty. Would it have mattered if lunch cost me a hundred more dollars? If I hand-made a ring for her would it be outshined by a ring I picked out of a David Yurman catalogue? Nope. I think not. Mom loves me all the same.

Thoughtfully,

Sam

Never Too Many
Wenocur_blog_

Many clients only think to reset large diamonds. Diamonds from an anniversary band are very often fine quality, matched well and of uniform size, making them easy to restyle!

One thing to keep in mind is the cost of restyling smaller diamonds can sometimes outweigh the value of the diamonds themselves. Even if the diamonds come from a sentimental piece of jewelry, you should at least have a conversation about it beforehand.

Breathing new life into smaller diamonds can be an enjoyable process. It is worth considering. Make the new design fit with your wardrobe, lifestyle and personal taste. I usually recommend filling a gap by making something that compliments the other jewelry you like to wear.

Like I always say, “Women can never have too many pairs of shoes, or too many pairs of earrings.”

I just finished this pair of earrings for Stan and Lucy. I only wish you could see how gracefully they move! I hope that Stan and Lucy enjoy many an evening while they tickle her neck!

Always Your Jeweler,

Sam

Our Nation's Capitol, South America & Connecticut
Whitehousebrothers7089platinumdiamondengagementring

Michael and Heather, Congratulations!

I wish the ring fit better for you. Naturally, an adjustment will be handled with top priority by our master craftsman.

In the few months I’ve known Michael, he lived in our nation’s capitol, took a business trip to South America and moved to Connecticut. Concurrently, he managed to get himself engaged! Bravo!

And Heather, just so you know, the diamond in your engagement ring is nature’s finest color (D). No matter how many anniversaries you enjoy together, how much your love for each other grows or how well you do financially, no one, not even you can do any better than Michael has already done for you. I think that makes him “a keeper”.

Congratulations again to you both!

A Little Effort Can Go A Long Way
001-130-00429

Tim came to CRAIG COYNE hoping to get engaged. He spoke with my business partner Jesse. Jesse is the man when it comes to getting what anyone needs. He took Tim’s information and made a few calls.

Having never met Tim, I like the fact that he didn’t just go out and buy what he was exposed to. Instead, he thought about what was important to him and to his girlfriend.

Jesse was able to procure a ring that isn’t on the designers web-site and isn’t in their catalogue. In fact, I’ve worked with the designer for about 15 years, and I never saw it myself.

All this took place because Tim wanted something nicer, something special. Well done!

Congratulations on your engagement! It must feel great knowing your ring isn’t found just anywhere. I guess the incredibly brilliant and fine quality diamond in the center doesn’t hurt either. LOL.

Square Sam, Square
001-130-00412

Jason (see post below) asked me to make an engagement ring and after I explained how nice his Bubbie’s (that’s Grandmother in case you have a Nanna or Omma in your family) diamond was, he decided to use it as the center. We set off to build a ring that not only paid homage to the heritage of the diamond but also offered a fresh new start. Jason wanted the diamond to have a very square appearance. Using vintage setting techniques with fresh and modern styling, we flanked it with fine quality princess cut diamonds and used delicate tooling to exaggerate the strong geometry. A few minor adjustments and we were ready to go.

After delivering a custom made engagement ring that took nearly six months in consultations and construction to complete, I couldn’t wait to hear how things went. I waited and I waited. Honestly, I don’t know how you girls do it! All I did was make the ring and I was going nuts!

Finally, I got the news. Jason sent me the coolest video of his proposal too.

Congratulations Jason and Stephanie! I am thrilled that you are thrilled!

Cheers,

A Tough Old Bird and A Battle Axe
Img_0415

Barb enters. Barbara used to own a jewelry store, has a large collection of jewelry herself and wants to know if she got a good deal on a princess cut diamond for her son who’s about to get engaged. She hit me like Grant took Richmond.

She was on a mission and I was treading lightly. It was her first visit to the store and I felt like I was being tested. And so I was…

During one of her visits she referred to herself as “one tough old bird”. I still giggle when I think about it.

Barb’s son is engaged (see the post above), she left her own engagement ring in my care for an appraisal, she and her husband have made a few purchases and I custom made a pendant using her diamonds. All within six months.

If Barb is a tough old bird does that make me a battle axe?

Proud as Peacocks!
Img_9556_blog

Hi Kelly,

I wish I could have seen the reaction on your face when Alex proposed. He’s a stand up kind of guy and went out of his way to get you the perfect ring. Popping the question on one knee and being nervous, I’m sure Alex didn’t puff his chest and broaden his shoulders. But between you and me, you can both strut around like proud little peacocks! Hmm…now that I think about it, your sapphire is more vivid than the feathers of a peacock so we have to go with another animal. LOL.

Congratulations!

It’s a good day in the jewelry business, indeed!

Forever your jeweler,

Platinum and Diamond, Estate
Joel_web_

All the best to you both!

This engagement ring is an outstanding example of an era long ago. After some hallmark research, we learned the company who made it was founded in Pittsburgh in the 1860’s. Later moving to Baltimore in 1874 it continued until it burned to the ground in 1930.

Not only does thing ring come with heritage from an important maker in our area, it also has important connections to an important family in Mt. Vernon, Baltimore. A private residence overlooking the Washington Monument, by the Peabody Conservatory and The Engineers Club was one of several places the family called home.

By falling in love, Joel carries the past glamour of this ring into a bright new future. Well done!

Knowledge and Experience

I write a lot about artistic ability and about the people that inspire us to make beautiful jewelry.

I forget sometimes that many clients find us because of our credentials and longstanding history in the jewelry business.

Whether you like our style or find our knowledge and experience comforting, we appreciate the business.

When WBAL Channel 11 needed expert advise on a feature story about selling your gold, the I-Team called on us for help.

CRAIG COYNE is a trusted name in your community and we plan on keeping it that way!

Cherry Blossoms
_web_

If the store you shop at seems less than thrilled to entertain your ideas, check this out!

Ed wanted everything to be perfect and started by introducing me to his fiancée and her mother. After we captured important information, Ed and I worked together to make the perfect engagement ring.

Sometime Friday night, when I was in Baltimore watching Monster Trucks and later having sushi in Mt. Vernon (odd combo, I know…LOL), Ed proposed!

I just got an email from Ed, who wrote, "I asked her. She said “YES!”

Masterfully hand engraved with flowing images of Cherry Blossoms makes this ring one of a kind!

Congratulations!

Valentines Day Massacre
Line3_web_

When we send mail, it is our intention that you find it meaningful and important to read. Trying hard not to be a nuisance, CRAIG COYNE sends a simple postcard with a simple message.

Apparently a few of you got our message!

Beginning at 7:30AM on Valentines Day, our loyal customers began to form a line in front our Historic Ellicott City store.

Our best guess is that 150 people showed up that day.

We appreciate it all and hope that our jewelry is being worn daily and cherished always.

Thank you kindly.

Cheers,

Negative Space, An Attractive Option
Img_0023_web_

If you are becoming frustrated and not finding a great wedding band, come see us. Your ideas are taken seriously and we do our best to help you see them come to life.

Meghan’s engagement ring is lovely, but a normal wedding band creates lots of open spaces and she didn’t like that.

One trick we show our customers is to create a stronger sense of balance and the spaces don’t seem to bother you so much.

Try stacking a ring on each side. We made two identical bands using similar diamond shapes and setting styles. Because the spaces are balanced and uniform, they became a benefit in Meghan’s eyes!

The use of negative space is an artistic approach that we handle better than most.

Made To Order
Barrons_web_

An inherited engagement ring can pose some problems when it comes time to choosing a wedding band.

Don’t let what is on the market today dissuade you from what you really have in mind.

If you pay attention to just a few design elements, you will be amazed at how a new wedding band will compliment what you already own.

This is what we did for Vikas and Shailer and we think it’s looking pretty good!

Cheers,

A Dream...

Sometimes a dream piece of jewelry already exists in the world, almost as if someone read your mind and built it for you.

After a consultation, we provide samples of well-made jewelry in the styles and budgets that are important to you.

This sapphire and diamond ring saves us the time and expense of making it ourselves.

YOU WARE, Defined
15-00390_web2_

Many people wonder about our logo/tag line, YOU WARE.

The process behind creating a quality piece of jewelry is very complicated and blends technical details with artistic style. That is true of all jewelry, but what about the jewelry you want to wear? Doesn’t it also have to be affordable and lasting? Shouldn’t the jewelry you wear be special?

Making decisions without getting to know your customer first, is foolish and costly. We put people first, making something unique and well-suited for you to wear. If we did our job well, the jewelry you take home is deeply intimate, expressing who you are, what you believe and what’s in your heart.

Anyone can make stuff including jewelry and without a commitment to you as a person that’s all it will ever be. We believe the world is filled with ordinary things and we simply do not wish to contribute to it in any way.

Craig Coyne doesn’t have stuff, what we offer even goes beyond ordinary jewelry. What Craig Coyne creates is for you to wear and for you alone.

It is YOU WARE.

Professionally,

Sam Coyne

Magnificent Engagement

When Chris and Kristen first came to see me, they had specific ideas. Fortunately for me their design sense was solid and they were artistic.

Here’s the fruit of our efforts. It took many weeks to make and so it should. If it were easy to do, we wouldn’t find it so striking!

Congratulations to Chris and Kristen! (very cool couple – very cool ring)

More Than A Million & Only Two
Img_0007_web_

More than a million people gathered in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the inauguration of the forty-fourth president of the United States. With so many people coming together, the social scene exploded. Parties and a parade, luncheons and dinners, people gathered with hopes of a better future. Several Craig Coyne originals made it to Washington, D.C. adorning our clients and adding to the excitement and scene.

For a moment, just imagine the sheer volume of intimate moments that were shared during such an event. I want to share one of those personal moments with you.

Surrounded by a sea of strangers, Jon and Jess went ice skating outside, the weekend before the inauguration. Jon proposed. Many of their friends were included and witnessed as Jon put the ring on her finger and Jess said, “Yes!”

A crowd of more than a million anonymous people, doesn’t compare to the satisfaction of helping two people personally.

I wish you the very best!

She Will Say Yes
15-00232_web_

Without ever meeting her, the woman about to receive this engagement ring is someone I like.

One statement only and I was convinced.

Her boyfriend stood in my store and simply said, “I wouldn’t need a ring at all. She’s not that kind of girl. She will say yes regardless.”

For the woman who will wear this ring, I will be your family jeweler for the rest of your life. That is assuming you do indeed say yes! LOL

Congratulations Eli!

Stepping Up to Step Down
15-00394_c_

A DC resident stepped up to the plate with this fancy colored sapphire and diamond engagement ring that we made for him.

The sapphires step down from the center, offering simple architecture and better contrast.

We reviewed and matched sapphires, chose an ideal cut diamond of exceptional quality in the center and made the ring entirely of platinum.

Quality construction takes time and effort, but we feel it makes all the difference.

Congratulations to Bill and Teresa!

All Aboard!
15-00321blog

Your girlfriend is leaving from Florida to work on a cruise ship for four months. You live in Maryland and go to school in Pennsylvania.

Sounds like the beginning of a sad country song, minus the pick-up truck and dog.

Many people grab a hold of opportunity, but Bryan catapulted himself over almost every obstacle to land himself squarely where he wanted.

Ring in hand and determined to propose before she left, Bryan reversed the sadness of saying good bye, replacing it with the excitement of engagement and dreams of a future together.

Take a look at the ring. I think the cruise ship will navigate safely home with the beacon of light coming of this baby!

Congratulation!

Dear Heather,

Your boyfriend came to me with a clear idea about what he wanted, the very best. But there is something I want you to know. The best wasn’t enough for Todd. He wanted a well-done, unique ring that reflected your taste and his sentiment.

Todd never stopped thinking about you and how to make you happy. I could see him asking himself, “Will she like it?”.

I am thrilled that you do.

The very best of anything means nothing without truly caring. Congratulations on finding the one who does.

Five and Dime Affection
Rizzigblog

This story is a good one. When they first dated he was given a “five and dime” silver ring that was cool but not very expensive. He lost it. Time passes, he proposes, she says yes and the ring shows up! It was smashed into the track below his car seat (I’m sure there is a story there, but I won’t get into that now). The new-found, smashed ring was the inspiration behind what we made as his new wedding ring!

Last night on Halloween, they married.

Congratulations to Grant and Jessi!

Practicality Conquered!

A practical woman understands that a home has many needs, but how many women would choose a steel fridge over a diamond engagement ring?

Fortunately, my latest client made sure his fiancee will have both.

Somehow, I think the ice coming out of the fridge won’t last as long as the ice on her finger!

Casey, It was a pleasure. Congratulations! Please introduce Donna after your proposal.

IDEAL CUT DIAMONDS AND GOOD OLD FASHIONED COMMON SENSE.

If you could buy an ideal cut diamond, a diamond with such precise proportions that mathematically its considered the very best, wouldnt you consider it?

If you could buy a diamond that is more beautiful than others, a diamond graded with the latest in light performance technology, wouldnt you consider it?

If you could buy an eight hearts and eight arrows diamond that is dissected during the grading process with such incredible accuracy that your level of certainty is guaranteed, wouldnt you consider it?

If you could buy an ideal cut diamond with such strong value that the price withstood the harshest internet search available including every major diamond website, ebay, Blue Nile, and Craigs List, wouldnt you consider it?

If you could buy the most beautiful diamond using your own eyes while sitting in a local and comfortable store using the finest available binocular zoom microscope, wouldnt you consider it?

If you could buy the most brilliant diamond with a Graduate Gemologist trained at the Gemological Institute of America who acts as your guide through a maze of questions and concerns, wouldnt you consider it?

If you could be convinced of anything, you should be convinced we are worth the trip. Please consider Craig Coyne.

RETURN FROM VEGAS

We’re back from Las Vegas. In case you missed it, we closed the store to go on a huge buying trip.

Michael bought his way through the International Antique & Estate Jewelry show. He opened numerous new accounts and found some increbible jewels. My favorites are a few Art Nouveau jewels that Michael found at a strong value.

Jesse attended the 16th Annual Jewelry Show where he found fresh, new designers from all over the United States and the world. An “unbreakable” new Titanium collection from Belgium captured my attention immediately. The patented technique makes thin wires of Titanium unable to be bent. I especially enjoyed the delicate and feminine style coupled with the extreme durability. Great for travel, the fashion forward and the “rough and tough” active woman.

Wonderful Windex

Here’s a little trick that jewelers have known about for years…if your rings are stuck on your fingers, try a spray of Windex! Yes, Windex. Windex makes skin very slippery but still allows you to hold tightly to your ring, making it so much easier to take off.
